چکیده
The measurement of ocean surface wind speeds in precipitation from satellite microwave radiometers is a challenging task. Rain attenuates the signal that emitted surface. Moreover, rain and signals are very similar, which makes it difficult to distinguish rain. contamination can be mitigated for operate simultaneously at C-band X-band channels, such as WindSat, AMSR-E AMSR2. basic principle use combinations between channels sensitive speed but relatively insensitive Based on this principle, we have developed algorithms retrieving WindSat AMSR sensors. These statistical regressions trained specifically under tropical cyclone conditions. We lay out steps algorithm development, training, testing. major source training provided by SMAP L-band radiometer, been proven provide reliable strong storms not affected show perform well where standard passive retrievals fail. examine possibility extending C/X-band X/K-band discuss how broadened conditions global winds retrievals.

Ocean Vector Winds in Storms from the SMAP L-Band Radiometer
Our paper discusses the unique capability of the SMAP L-band radiometer to measure strong winds in tropical and extratropical cyclones. There is no significant degradation in rain. INTRODUCTION AND OUTLINE The Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission SMAP (Entekhabi et al., 2010) was launched in January 2015 and has been providing science data since April 2015. Though designed to measure soil moist...
متن کاملReexamination of Tropical Cyclone Wind–Pressure Relationships
Tropical cyclone wind–pressure relationships are reexamined using 15 yr of minimum sea level pressure estimates, numerical analysis fields, and best-track intensities. Minimum sea level pressure is estimated from aircraft reconnaissance or measured from dropwindsondes, and maximum wind speeds are interpolated from best-track maximum 1-min wind speed estimates. The aircraft data were collected p...
متن کاملTropical Cyclone Wind Retrievals from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit: Application to Surface Wind Analysis
Horizontal winds at 850 hPa from tropical cyclones retrieved using the nonlinear balance equation, where the mass field was determined from Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) temperature soundings, are compared with the surface wind fields derived from NASA’s Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) and Hurricane Research Division H*Wind analyses. It was found that the AMSU-derived wind speeds at 85...
متن کاملDynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan
Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...
متن کاملEffects of Vertical Wind Shear and Storm Motion on Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Asymmetries Deduced from TRMM
Vertical wind shear and storm motion are two of the most important factors contributing to rainfall asymmetries in tropical cyclones (TCs). Global TC rainfall structure, in terms of azimuthal distribution and asymmetries relative to storm motion, has been previously described using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager rainfall estimates. The mean TC rainfall distribution and...
